Marble can become cracked or chipped, even though it is a stone. If marble tiles are used and the grouting becomes loose, the tile is more easily chipped. Cracks can happen if something heavy is accidentally dropped on the surface. Then Marble repair is necessary.
Surfaces to receive repair must be sound and free of all dust, dirt, grease or any other coatings, if it's not clean the repair will not adhear properly. Remove loose and brittle Marble or grout (if the surface is Marble tile) from the damaged area, you can use a manual or pneumatic type of cutting tool. The area being repaired, should be brought down to provide a minimum of 1/4" depth.
Do not install repairs that have a feathered edge, there has to be a square cut area for the repair compound to adhere too. Incorrect installation will cause repairs to fail prematurely. Wash the prepared surface with clean water and a bristle brush to remove dust from the pores.
Mix the repair material, there are several commercial mixes to choose from (mortar type compounds), to a "peanut butter consistency" using the manufacturers instructions. Using excess water may affect the repair. After the surface is clean and prepared, the area needs to be wet and the compound applied, depending on the size of the area with a trowel of appropriate size. The area need to be filled and the refilled again until smooth.
Curing of the material is a critical step depending upon the conditions the repair is being done in. Large repair areas mighty require successive applications, this will help to avoid material slumping. This can be a tricky process and there fore many home owners will contract a Marble professional to do any type of Marble chipping or cracking repair.
